Thesis Proposal (Revised 2.29.2012)

 

Structural Depth

The focus of this thesis will be to redesign the lateral system of the New York City Bus Depot. The redesign will take place with bucking restrained braced in place of the moment frames currently perscribed in the design. The goal of this is to reduce the number of overall lateral frames and to control the drifts of the third floor mezzanine and high roof. This will be done in hopes of decreasing cost and time in the construction phase of the project.

Breadth 1 - Construction

Due to the change in materials and brace type, a study of the construction timeline and an evaluation of a detailed cost analysis will need to be performed. The main focus of the construction breadth will be on the steel connections.

Breadth 2 - Daylighting

Due to the relocation of the braced frames along the facade, a daylighting breadth will need to be studied for the alteration of glazing. This will include calculations of available daylight, original interior daylight availability, and new glazing placement interior daylight availability.

This will place the building into seismic design category D rather than seismic design category C. The redesign will take place with braced frames rather than the moment frames currently perscribed in the design. This will be done in hopes of decreasing cost and time in the construction phase of the project.
